Making a Difference

This year, the natural disasters are on the rampage. And literally millions of people have experienced tremendous trauma, loss, and suffering. We all want to help, giving something of value beyond cash donations, but there seem to be so many limitations in our time, travel, ability to take leave from business or work.

But there is something very wonderful and special that AAPH Members can do.

The Red Cross, the State Health & Welfare Department, the City Welfare Department, and folks from neighboring cities and states - these groups can and have provided emergency food, water, medical, transportation, housing, and even space in schools for children and jobs for adults. And these are all worthy ways to spend our charity and rescue dollars.

None of those groups, however, can heal the trama, the nightmares, the phobias created and deep feelings of loss, insecurity, and sense of disconnection. All the food and medical supplies in the world can't do that.

But we can! As hypnotherapists, we can provide the healing hypntoherapy sessions, guided visualizations, and calming exercises that reconnect the mind, body and spirit. It is a special gift for healing the long-term effects of these disasters, and it is a gift that only our profession can provide. It is our opportunity to give something really meaningful, special and valuable from ourselves.

AAPH is sponsoring and organizing the "FreeMP3 Hypnotherapy: Healing for Trauma" program. We are asking each of our members to create a simple audio recording of a 15-20 minute hypnotherapy session specifically aimed at healing one of the elements or effects of truama and loss experienced in these natural disasters.

AAPH will provide these audio sessions for free download on the Internet. Each session will be identified with a title, the name of the Hypnotherapist (and web site address, if desired), a focus and description, language, an age range, male/female voice, and music/no music. These MP3 files will then be made available to anyone for free download.

People will be able to listen to these sessions directly on their computers, burn them to CD, or download them into their iPods or MP3 players.

Every session and MP3 file will be provided under the Creative Commons "No-Commercial-Use" license, so it will be illegal for anyone to resell any of these sessions, collections of these sessions, or use any portion of the sessions for commerical purposes. However, the license does allow people to provide free copies via any media to other people. This allows other charity groups to deliver these sessions to people without Internet access, or in support group and therapist programs. See the actual license at: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/

While we expect most sessions will be submitted in English, we will be most happy with other-language submissions! We understand that many of the victims of these disasters - especially in Asia - don't speak English. We will do all we can with the languages and skills we have to help all those we can.

WHAT TO DO:

1) Select a focus for your hypnotherapy session: child or adult, and the aspect of trauma you will address. All healing modalities are welcome: from progressive relaxation and positive visualization of healing, to transformative metaphor work, to gremlin and champion work, to your favorite method!

2) Script the session or not, as you prefer. Make your session 15-20 mins long.

3) Record your session: you can record to a CD (compact disc), or directly to digital audio/MP3.

DIGITAL AUDIO/MP3:

To create an MP3 directly, record the session into your computer using the audio software of your choice. Edit as desired, add a relaxing background track as desired. (Be sure your music track is royalty-free and you have full distribution rights!) Mix, and save as an MP3 file. Your file should be less than 25MB in size.

If you are just getting started in digital audio, there are many tutorials on the Internet. Look for How-To's on Podcasting. Podcasts are audio files (MP3 and MP4 preferred) that can be automatically downloaded into people's iPods. Follow all the directions to create the podcast, and when they say "upload the MP3 file to your server", simply upload the file to the AAPH server. [**link will be here for upload**]

CD:

Use a CD-recorder (not mini-disc), computer, or other CD-audio recording system to record your session. If you use any background music, be sure it is royalty-free and you have full rights to use it in anyway you wish! Mail the CD to AAPH Headquarters along with a printed version of the "FreeMP3 Hypnotherapy: Healing for Trauma" submission form. CD must be playable in a standard CD/MP3 disc player. The data on the CD can be either an MP3 file or CD audio format.

4) Tell your friends, family, charities, online groups, and community about the program! You can post this link to forums, emails, and general distribution:

THANK YOU!

This is an incredible gift that addresses long-term recovery and healing issues that other organizations and efforts cannot. Additionally, your name and session will be out there for people to see, and they'll know that you cared enough about your community, your nation, and your fellow citizens to donate your professional skills in a very special way. It's a win-win-win proposition.

So go get started today!
